The Pool

We are one of the few schools in Somerset lucky enough to still have a school swimming pool and what a fantastic facility it is for our children, families and community.

A few years ago our old pool had got to the point where it was unusable and we had to make a decision about what to do. The feeling and support from parents was so strong that a group of them got together and formed the ‘Pool Committee’ led by Mr Rapley, whose dedication has been unfailing through some tough times. But to cut a long story short, they managed to raise £45,000 from fund raising events and grants, including a large grant from Armed Forces Community Covenant. Using this money we were able to rebuild the pool and improve the facility.

It is a 12m by 6m in ground learner pool which has a shallow end of 80cm and deep end of 1.2m. It has an air source heat pump which keeps the pool at about 29°C and this has extended our swimming season. We hope be able to use the pool from April to end of September.

The younger children have regular swimming lessons in school time in our pool, which helps them develop water confidence and swimming skills. The aim is that by the time the children are Y3 they can all swim a width of a our pool and be confident in the water. The older children use the pool for weekly teaching lessons to develop strokes, stamina and speed. The children in Y5 and Y6 are taught swimming at Huish Leisure Pool in the spring term and in the summer term they develop their skills in the school pool. Children that are less confident have extra sessions to ensure they become confident and safe swimmers.

The pool is also for private hire. See more info in the conditions of hire below.

Private hire is available but there are key terms and conditions that must be adhered to including having a First Aider and second adult to oversee the pool as there is no lifeguard.
